Week three started after only one day of holiday/excursion. The arcitects continued measuring sector three within the citycenter of Petra, while the archaeologists were closing sounding 2 and moving toards sounding 3. As sounding 2 revealed a much more complex structure than expected, work there lasted up to the middle of week three. In the middle of week three family Schmid left to enjoy the rest of their holidays in Jordan.

Weekend. Time for a visit at Nazzal’s Camp. In 1934, Thomas & Sons, travel agents for travellers interested in exploring the ancient city of Petra, had established a three-bed campsite near Qasr al-Bint. Two years later, the government of Jordan leased the camp to the Nazzal family, who increased the number of tents and then built a small hotel with eleven rooms, which became known as Nazzal’s Camp. In 1980 the building was reclaimed by the Department of Antiquities as a dig house for visiting archaeologists. Using funds obtained through bilateral agreements between the Jordanian and Swiss governments, the Petra National Trust, in collaboration with a private Jordanian engineering firm, completely rehabilitated the building in 1995. In 1996, under the patronage of Queen Noor al-Hussein, the building was inaugurated and acquired its new name, the Johann Ludwig Burkhardt Centre, in memory of the Swiss explorer. Many archaeological expeditions have since enjoyed the perfect location of this house and its nightly peaceful silence.
